Aboard S/V Hourglass: A 2020 Fountaine Pajot Saona 47

Broker Keagan Steyn walks a charter-maintained, owner's-version Saona 47 in St. Thomas — from twin sugar scoops to a master suite that punches well above 47 feet.

Filmed on a breezy day in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, this walkthrough of S/V Hourglass — a 2020 Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 in owner’s version layout — is led by Keagan Steyn, who knows the boat’s working life as well as its layout. Hourglass has been professionally maintained by Virgin Island Yacht Charters, and Steyn opens by listing the upgrades: all-new exterior upholstery, generator, water maker, solar panels and more.

Starting at the sugar scoops

The tour begins in the starboard sugar scoop, the first of two mechanical spaces, home to one of the Volvo D2-60 engines and an 11 kW Cummins Onan generator. The port scoop holds the second Volvo, plus an Aqua Base water maker rated at 25 gallons per hour — a meaningful number for anyone planning long stretches at anchor. Also aft: a swim ladder and an AB dinghy with a 25 hp four-stroke Yamaha outboard.

A helm built for short-handed sailing

Steyn spends real time at the starboard helm, and it’s clear why. The throttles sit far outboard, so a captain coming alongside for a starboard-side tie keeps full visibility of the dock — including while backing down. A full array of Garmin electronics sits at the console, along with a Quick windlass remote that lets the helmsman drop or retrieve the anchor without leaving the seat. With the winches also within reach, he makes the case plainly: this is a boat that can be single-handed.

Access to that helm comes from two directions — the wide port and starboard weather decks, which Steyn notes are generously sized with solid handrails for moving about in a swell, and directly from the cockpit via a staircase. In sporty conditions, nobody has to step outside. The life raft is stowed beneath those stairs.

Living spaces, inside and up top

The foredeck seating area takes advantage of the Saona’s wide beam — room for lounging, reading, even bean bags. Aft, the cockpit pairs a large dining table with an aft-facing lounge and what Steyn calls one of his favorite features: a plumbed-in grill station with a cutting board, purpose-built for filleting the day’s catch and putting it straight on the barbecue. There’s also a 110V outlet in the cockpit, an easy-to-overlook detail he flags for anyone who works outdoors or wants an ice maker on the counter.

Up the stairs, the flybridge offers U-shaped seating and sun loungers, with a hardtop over the helm and a window that lets the captain watch the mainsail go up and down. A hatch from the flybridge level channels breeze down into the cockpit — a Fountaine Pajot touch Steyn singles out as something other builders don’t offer.

Interior salon and galley of the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 with island countertop and L-shaped settee

Galley, salon and accommodations

Inside, the galley is the star: a large island that separates cooking from the salon, a three-burner stove top with an Italian-made Airlux oven, a two-basin sink, fridge-freezer under the counter, a second fridge above the microwave, and storage everywhere — above, below and around. The salon holds a nav table with Garmin electronics and Fusion audio control, an L-shaped couch, and a coffee table with more stowage beneath. Ice maker, coffee maker and toaster round out the counter.

To starboard are two guest cabins: an aft queen with good light and ventilation, and a forward cabin with a slightly raised walkaround berth plus a V-berth space ahead of it — currently used to stow the Code Zero, but fitted with a mattress and a sensible spot for children. Each guest cabin has its own head with an electric toilet, dry-head layout and separate shower.

The entire port hull is the owner’s suite. Past the 12V panel, generator remote and water maker controls, it opens into a queen walkaround berth, extensive wardrobe and shelf storage, a desk-style office nook with air conditioning, a large hanging locker, and a master head with a shower Steyn describes as remarkable on a 47-footer.
