Ocean Stars is a rare and exceptionally capable custom steel pilothouse cutter designed by world-renowned naval architect Jay Benford and purpose-built for serious offshore and high-latitude cruising. Conceived as a true liveaboard passagemaker with global range, immense storage, and outstanding mechanical access, she combines the ruggedness and safety of a steel expedition yacht with the comfort and practicality required for extended cruising.

Originally constructed by Custom Steel Boats, Inc. in Merritt, North Carolina, the hull, deck, and superstructure were completed in 1995, with the vessel fully commissioned and launched in 2003. Since then, Ocean Stars has benefited from extensive refits, continual upgrades, and knowledgeable ownership from just two owners over her lifetime.

Designed to comfortably circumnavigate while remaining easily handled by a couple, Ocean Stars features a fully protected center cockpit, dual helm stations, a raised pilothouse that provides outstanding visibility and protection in all weather, redundant systems, and impressive fuel and storage capacity. Her thoughtfully designed interior offers comfortable accommodations and excellent livability.

From 2014 onward, the current owners undertook a substantial modernization and systems refit that transformed Ocean Stars into a highly refined and exceptionally capable bluewater cruising yacht.

In 2024, Ocean Stars underwent a detailed marine survey that highlighted the vessel’s overall exceptional condition, updated systems, thorough maintenance, a clean and well-maintained engine room, extensive records and receipts, and excellent overall condition. The vessel was assigned a market value of $657,250 at that time.

Today, Ocean Stars presents a rare opportunity to acquire a heavily upgraded, thoughtfully engineered, ocean-capable steel cruising yacht that is prepared for serious offshore passagemaking or comfortable full-time liveaboard cruising.

Jason Decker

By Jason Decker

Captain Jason Decker has spent much of his life on or under the water. A lifelong sailor, licensed captain, and scuba instructor, he brings decades of hands-on experience to every interaction—whether he’s guiding guests on cruising charters, helping future cruisers learn the ropes, or offering honest, practical advice as a yacht broker.

His first sailboat was a Hobie 16, and that kicked off a passion for sailing that hasn’t let up since. Over the next 20+ years, Jason spent as much time as possible racing a variety of PHRF and one-design sailboats. He became deeply involved in the J/24 class, qualifying for and competing in two J/24 World Championships. He’s also raced on high-performance yachts like the 1D 35, Farr 50, and TP52, as well as racer-cruisers such as the Cape Fear 38 and a range of J-Boats—even the occasional cruising yacht. When it comes to understanding how boats perform—and how they’re built to handle real-world conditions—Jason has spent years right in the thick of it.

But racing was just one chapter. Jason is also a 200-ton commercially licensed captain and seasoned offshore multihull cruiser, with over 40,000 bluewater catamaran cruising miles under his belt. For nearly two decades, he chartered cruising catamarans throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and Thailand, sharing his love of sailing and the cruising lifestyle with friends and guests. In 2010, he sailed more than 12,000 nautical miles from the Caribbean to New Zealand, island-hopping across the South Pacific. That adventure sparked a new phase of his life—one that blends travel, seamanship, and a deep commitment to life at sea.

Today, Jason runs charters aboard his St. Francis 50 catamaran Tahina, offering immersive, week-long liveaboard experiences in the Exuma Islands of the Bahamas. These aren’t typical vacations—they’re hands-on introductions to the cruising lifestyle, designed for aspiring cruisers who want a true sense of what it’s like to live aboard a fully outfitted bluewater catamaran. With Jason as your guide, you’ll gain firsthand insight into everything from onboard systems and route planning to anchoring strategy and daily life off the grid.

Jason brings this depth of real-world experience to his work as a yacht broker with The Multihull Company. His practical knowledge of cruising catamarans, their systems, and the lifestyle they support makes him a trusted resource for anyone looking to buy or sell a multihull. Whether you’re just starting out or already well underway, Jason’s goal is simple: to help you make informed, confident decisions that align with your goals on the water.
