While those plans ultimately changed, the investment in Pivot remained. Her professionally installed Victron energy system with 2,250 watts of solar and 1,320Ah of lithium, newer standing rigging and sails, modern Raymarine electronics, code zero, Starlink, high-output watermaker, backup auto pilot, and extensive maintenance records reflect a boat prepared for extended remote cruising.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Exterior & Deck
The Lagoon 500 is a BIG boat at 51ft / 15.54m, and Pivot makes particularly good use of that space with three genuinely separate outdoor living areas: the spacious aft cockpit, elevated flybridge, and a large forward lounge overlooking the trampolines. For a family living aboard, that ability to spread out becomes one of those features you appreciate more and more over time.

The aft cockpit has teak underfoot extending onto the sugar scoops, a large U-shaped dining and lounging area, outdoor sink and countertop, and a dedicated beverage fridge. A full cockpit enclosure was added in 2025, creating additional protection from weather and extending the usability of this space while underway or at anchor.

Up on the flybridge, there is plenty of room for everyone to gather around the helm without crowding the helmsman. Her owners have said they’ve comfortably sat 10 people up there! Forward, custom lounge cushions transform what could otherwise be unused deck space into another legitimate outdoor lounge area overlooking the turquoise water-colored trampolines (which are in excellent condition)…one of our favorite spaces aboard Pivot.

A substantial exterior cushion & canvas refit was completed in 2025, including replacement of every exterior cushion, custom foredeck lounge cushions, flybridge cover, full cockpit enclosure, mainsail bag, dinghy chaps, and four custom snorkel-gear bags. Everything remains in excellent condition and gives Pivot’s exterior a noticeably updated feel.

The dinghy davits were reinforced in 2025, and ground tackle is centered around a heavy 55kg Rocna primary anchor. Her 2,250W solar array is integrated above the exterior living spaces, providing protection for the dinghy and transom without taking away the areas aboard that people actually use.

All Lewmar hatches throughout the boat have been replaced, another significant refit item that has already been taken care of. No leaky hatches or crazing lenses to deal with. This all amounts to a substantial cost savings that Pivot’s next owners will not have to worry about for a long time!

Salon & Galley
We have an unofficial ban on the word “expansive” around here, thanks to years of yacht and real estate listings overusing it to describe just about everything. So forgive me, as I’m about to break that rule for Pivot. Her salon really is expansive, bright, comfortable, and genuinely set up for living aboard. Large windows surround the space, providing great visibility and natural light, while multiple forward hatches provide loads of airflow. The interior cushions were redone in 2021 and remain in excellent condition. The cushions are firm and the fabric has minimal signs of wear. A 42” wall-mounted TV was added in 2024, and there is an impressive amount of cabinet storage throughout.

The person in the galley keeps connected to the rest of the salon and has plenty of counter space for preparing meals for a full crew. We love how there are multiple counter spaces so the crew can get involved in meal prep without getting in each other’s way. It feels like a proper kitchen versus a galley squeezed into a boat. Refrigeration is a particular strength aboard Pivot, with five fridge/freezer units distributed throughout the boat, including additional cold storage just down the stairs in the port hull and a beverage fridge in the cockpit. For a family provisioning for extended time off-grid, that amount of refrigeration makes all the difference.

Just down the stairs from the galley is one of our favorite liveaboard features aboard Pivot: a dedicated laundry and utility area. A Miele front-loading washing machine sits beneath a large countertop that gives you an actual place to sort and fold laundry or plug in additional appliances. This would be a great place to keep an espresso machine, blender, etc., to keep the galley from getting cluttered. Additional refrigerator/freezer capacity and appliance storage are built into the space, and the owners added AC outlets in the back of the counter so small appliances can be stored and used right there.

All of this is a simple example of what we love about this generation of Lagoon. The 500 dedicates an incredible amount of its interior volume to storage and practical living space in a way you don’t always find on newer catamarans. Off-Grid Electrical System
This is one of the areas where the owners’ original plans for Pivot really show. They were preparing her for a circumnavigation, and the goal wasn’t simply to add solar and lithium…it was to build an entire off-grid infrastructure with multiple ways to charge, make power, and remain self-sufficient when spending extended time away from the dock.

Pivot’s off-grid electrical system was completely overhauled in 2022 around a professionally installed Victron Energy system (the full equipment invoice is available for serious buyers). At the heart of it are four 330Ah Victron Smart lithium batteries providing a 1,320Ah house bank, paired with a Victron Quattro 5,000W inverter/charger. A Cerbo GX and GX Touch provide centralized onboard and remote monitoring and control, with the supporting Victron components and protections installed as part of the same system upgrade.

Keeping that battery bank charged is a substantial 2,250W solar array, along with upgraded Balmar alternators with serpentine-belt conversions for additional charging while the engines are running. When solar and alternator charging aren’t enough, Pivot has a 13kW Onan generator as another source of power and redundancy.

Fresh water is handled by a Sea Recovery Aqua Whisper 800 watermaker producing approximately 70 gallons per hour, with a new motor installed in 2025. With that kind of output, making water doesn’t need to become an all-day event just to keep up with a family aboard.

Refrigeration & Freezer Storage
Refrigeration is another area where Pivot really shines as a liveaboard boat. There are 5 fridge/freezer units throughout the vessel, giving a family enough cold-storage capacity to provision for extended periods away from marinas and grocery stores without trying to cram everything into one galley refrigerator.

Cold storage is spread throughout the boat rather than taking over the galley. In addition to the galley refrigeration, Pivot has additional refrigerator and freezer capacity in the utility/laundry area just down the stairs, a dedicated beverage fridge in the cockpit, and a large Dometic CFX3-75 portable fridge/freezer that can be configured as needed.

It’s a setup that makes a lot of sense for long-term cruising. Everyday food and drinks can stay close at hand while bulk provisions, frozen food, and longer-term stores have somewhere else to go. Combined with Pivot’s huge amount of dry storage, there is legitimate space aboard to provision for a family rather than constantly planning the cruising itinerary around the next grocery store.

Accommodations & Comfort
Where do we even start!? This is where Pivot’s four-cabin owner’s layout really separates itself from the traditional two option layouts of so many other catamarans. You get the privacy and additional space of a true owner’s suite without sacrificing a fourth proper bedroom. All four cabins have genuine queen berths, and with 51 feet of boat to work with, each cabin feels like its own private space rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

The two forward cabins are particularly impressive. Instead of pushing the berths farther into the narrowing hulls, Lagoon oriented the large queen beds athwartships, extending inboard over the bridgedeck. The result is a proper bedroom with a large bed, good space around it, and considerably more storage than you typically expect from a forward cabin. Both have extensive closet and drawer storage, and each has its own private head with a separate shower and additional bathroom storage.

The owner’s suite adds even more living space, with a dedicated settee, additional cabinetry and storage, and enough separation to feel like a genuine retreat from the rest of the boat. For parents cruising with kids, that combination is hard to beat: everyone can have a real bedroom and private space of their own without the parents giving up the benefits of an owner’s layout.

That sense of separation is something Pivot does exceptionally well. Whether you’re cruising with teenagers, another couple, or family visiting for a few weeks, people can actually retreat to their own part of the boat. Add the incredible amount of storage throughout each cabin and the boat makes a lot of sense for a family planning to live aboard.

Pivot has six dedicated air-con units throughout the boat. Each of the four cabins has its own unit and thermostat, so everyone can control the temperature in their own space without having to cool the entire boat. Two additional units serve the salon, providing plenty of cooling capacity for the large main living area in the tropical climates where boats like Pivot tend to spend their time.

Engines & Mechanical
Pivot is powered by twin Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75HP turbocharged diesels with just 3,907 hours on port and 4,159 hours on starboard, paired with Yanmar SD50 saildrives and Flexofold 3-blade folding propellers. For a 2009 cruising boat, those are low hours, averaging roughly 240 engine hours per year over Pivot’s life. It’s consistent with how her owners used the boat…choosing good sailing windows and sailing whenever conditions allowed rather than defaulting to the engines.

We personally started and ran both engines while aboard Pivot, and they run beautifully. Starts were quick, idle was smooth, and both engines responded exactly as we would want to see. Just as impressive were the ZF Marine fly-by-wire controls. Shifting in and out of gear was exceptionally smooth and effortless, and both SD50 saildrives engaged cleanly in forward and reverse. The same electronic throttle controls are available at both the flybridge helm and interior nav station and control can be transferred between each with the push of a button.

Both engines have also been upgraded with Balmar high-output alternators and serpentine-belt conversions, providing another substantial charging source for Pivot’s 1,320Ah lithium house bank while underway. The serpentine setup is better suited to the loads associated with high-output alternators than a traditional single V-belt arrangement.

Backup AC/ship power comes from an Onan 13kW generator with approximately 10,320 hours. The important context about the generator hours is that the electrical end received a major rebuild in 2023, including the stator and rotor and all engine maintenance has been done on schedule. We also personally started and ran the generator aboard Pivot, and it starts easily and runs as well as any Onan we’ve experienced. Electronics & Instruments
Pivot’s navigation electronics were substantially updated in 2022 around a modern Raymarine system. Dual Raymarine Axiom 12 multifunction displays provide chartplotting and system information, paired with Raymarine Quantum 2 radar, AIS, multiple Raymarine instrument displays, and a Raymarine autopilot.

One of our favorite features aboard Pivot is the interior nav station. This isn’t simply a chart table with a display mounted above it…it functions as a second helm station. From inside the salon, you have an Axiom 12 MFD, dedicated Raymarine instrument display, autopilot control, joystick steering, and a second set of ZF Marine fly-by-wire engine controls. You can navigate, steer, adjust the autopilot, and control both engines without going up to the flybridge…a feature every cruiser would really appreciate during night watches, rain, or rough weather.

The flybridge has its own full set of navigation and engine controls, allowing normal operation from above. The ZF electronic throttles at both stations are exceptionally smooth, and all of the navigation and control equipment we operated while aboard was functioning properly.

Pivot also carries a second Raymarine autopilot system as an intentionally protected backup for long-distance cruising. The backup ECU is already mounted with wiring run, and wiring for the second display has been run to the flybridge. The display itself remains disconnected, while the backup ram and hydraulic pump are stored aboard in the forward locker. Rather than keeping two complete systems energized, the owners intentionally kept these critical components disconnected and protected as spares should the primary autopilot ever fail or the boat experience an electrical event offshore. It’s another example of the redundancy built into Pivot while her owners were preparing for a circumnavigation.

For communications, Pivot is equipped with VHF at the nav station and helm, several handheld VHF units included, with Starlink for everyday connectivity and Iridium GO! for backup satellite communications when farther offshore.

Sails & Rigging
Pivot has already addressed several of the big-ticket items in the sail plan and rig. The complete standing rigging was replaced in 2020, followed by a new mainsail and genoa in 2021 and a new roller furler in 2022. For a 2009 cruising catamaran, having these major items already updated removes some significant projects from a new owner’s immediate refit list.

In 2023, a bowsprit and new martingale were added in Martinique. Pivot carries a Code Zero for lighter-air and reaching conditions. That additional sail plan gives the crew another tool in the sailing toolbox when the genoa isn’t the right tool for the conditions and helps make better use of the lighter winds cruisers regularly encounter. That sailing toolbox, combined with owners who intentionally chose good sailing windows and preferred sailing over motoring whenever conditions allowed, helps explain Pivot’s low engine hours for a 2009 cruising vessel.

The combination of updated standing rigging, newer primary sails, updated furling equipment, and the addition of the Code Zero and bowsprit fits the broader story of Pivot’s refit. These weren’t changes made simply to prepare the boat for market, they were part of the owners’ commitment to good stewardship of the vessel while preparing for longer-distance cruising.

Dinghy & Outboard
Pivot carries an EastMarine 390 Ultra Light aluminum RIB, measuring approximately 12’9”, powered by a Suzuki 25HP outboard that was new in 2022. It’s a properly sized family tender for a vessel of Pivot’s size, with plenty of capacity for provisioning runs, hauling gear, snorkeling trips, and everyday life at anchor.

The tender itself has some cosmetic wear here and there from use, but tubes hold air and it remains very functional. The newer Suzuki outboard is a nice pairing, and the tender received custom chaps in 2025 as part of Pivot’s exterior canvas refit. The dinghy hoist was also reinforced in 2025.

Pivot also comes with a 4’ × 8’ floating water mat, four paddleboards, and a tow tube.

Overall Condition
Pivot has clearly benefited from owners who continued investing in her throughout their time aboard. Many of the expensive projects that often come with buying an older cruising catamaran have already been addressed, including complete standing rigging, sails, electrical and electronics refits, exterior canvas and cushions, and more. Every exterior cushion has been replaced and remains in excellent condition, while the interior upholstery was replaced in 2021 and is also in excellent condition.

Importantly, both the forward and aft main bulkheads were professionally and significantly reinforced in 2025 by Peter Hoff at Flying Dutchman in Sint Maarten, who has extensive experience with bulkhead reinforcement on cruising catamarans and who’s work is highly respected within the cruising community. For a buyer planning extended offshore cruising, having this work already completed is a significant addition to Pivot’s refit history and added peace-of-mind.

As can be expected on a 2009 vessel, there are some areas of wear to portions of the interior woodwork, some minor surface gelcoat cracking and discoloring in areas around the boat, and other age-appropriate cosmetic imperfections. The anchor chain is currently functional, but the galvanizing has worn and we would put replacement on the list of future needs. Beyond some cosmetic wear for her age, Pivot shows extremely well and presents as a vessel that has been properly cared for.

Pivot’s owners weren’t making these investments to prepare her for sale. Much of the work was completed while preparing the boat for a planned circumnavigation, including upgrades and redundancies intended for long-distance cruising. Their plans ultimately changed, leaving the next owner with the benefit of that preparation.

The result is a boat where most of the big-ticket projects are already behind her. Rather than buying Pivot and immediately starting a major refit, the next owners get to benefit from years of thoughtful upgrades made by cruisers who were preparing to keep going.

Pivot’s Value
At an asking price of $435,000, Pivot is the clear value leader in the sparse Lagoon 500 market. When her extensive refit and upgrade package is considered alongside her asking price, there simply isn’t a comparable boat currently competing with her. Pivot offers the space, privacy, storage, systems, and redundancy of a boat upgraded for extended cruising at a price point that leaves a meaningful gap between her and any competition. The owners have chosen a realistic asking price, with the intention of finding Pivot’s next great family rather than testing the top of the market.
