S/V Vela is a Marathon based 2008 Leopard 40 For Sale By Owner. This owner requires financial settlement only. No trades.
Built in South Africa by Robertson & Caine and designed by Morelli & Melvin, this popular first-generation Leopard 40 has earned a reputation for exceptional durability, seaworthiness, and performance. Her capabilities were proven early with an Atlantic crossing directly from the factory. Easily managed by a solo sailor yet comfortable for a crew, she is a true blue-water cruising catamaran.
After five years of full-time live-aboard cruising, from the Bahamas to Maine, she is ready for her next owners to continue the adventure. Throughout our ownership, she has been extensively upgraded, thoughtfully maintained, and continuously improved. While many vessels are advertised as “turn-key,” Vela is genuinely ready to cruise today.
This vessel has never sustained hurricane damage and carries no insurance claim history. She is U.S. duty paid, U.S. Coast Guard documented, and currently located in the beautiful Florida Keys. Her ICW-friendly mast height allows easy passage under bridges throughout much of the U.S. East Coast and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Her protected, fully enclosed cockpit provides comfort and security in a wide range of conditions, making offshore passages both safe and more enjoyable.
Twin 30 HP Yanmar diesel engines (3,528 hrs port, 3,526 hrs starboard) provide reliable propulsion, fuel efficiency, and excellent maneuverability. With a beam of just 20’1″ (6.13 m), she can access many marinas, slips, and haul-out facilities that are unavailable to wider catamarans.
Designed for comfortable off-grid living, she features more than 2 kW of solar, providing ample power to live comfortably without worrying about your power consumption.
The vessel is configured with four cabins and two heads. Each hull features two queen berths, along with electric freshwater heads and separate shower stalls, offering comfortable accommodations for family and guests.
Climate control is provided by two 16,000 BTU Dometic air-conditioning units equipped with soft-starts. The salon is fitted with top-down/bottom-up blackout, heat-reducing shades, complemented by exterior Phifertex screens that help keep the interior cool and comfortable.
Vela represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a proven cruising catamaran that has already been outfitted for comfortable live-aboard and offshore sailing. She has carried us safely through thousands of miles, countless anchorages, and more adventures than we can fit into a listing.
