2003 Leopard 42 — a well-built, ocean-capable cruising catamaran that combines robust construction with easy systems and comfortable liveaboard accommodations. This 2003 exemplifies the model’s reputation for straightforward maintenance and reliable systems, making it an ideal platform for extended cruising or coastal entertaining. The Leopard 42 was designed in collaboration between Simonis-Voogd Design and Robertson & Caine. The concept of the Leopard 42 is to maximize space, performance and comforts. This model has become a classic in the catamaran world since first launched in 2001. Built in Cape Town, South Africa.

S/V AHONU is unique in that she is one of the few cruising catamaran models with direct-shaft-drive propellers instead of sail-drives. This feature was an absolute requirement when we were looking to buy a catamaran. S/V AHONU also has skeg-hung rudders. You’ll find this ‘blue-water’ feature on very few catamarans. When the wind blows, AHONU is driven by a fully battened mainsail with slab reefing, a 110% genoa, or a spinnaker when the wind is behind you. When the wind settles, she’s driven very economically by a pair of 2013 Yanmar 3JH5E 39hp diesel engines.

The interior offers 4 private queen cabins and a very spacious layout that lives beautifully inside and out — perfect for extended cruising, entertaining, or family life afloat. This boat has a large galley-up design with salon featuring an airy U-shaped settee (seats 6), spacious kitchen galley with corian countertop work surfaces, large refrigeration and storage in shelf lockers and drawer units. The NAV Station with instrumentation and electrical panels is situated to starboard with a flip top chart table, reading light, lower cabinetry for storage and an overhead cabinet providing access to the steering station wiring.

Although AHONU is the 4 bedroom/4 bathroom model, one of the bathrooms has been converted into a laundry-room with a Zeny washing machine. S/V AHONU is outrigged for sailing and living off the grid. She comes with older solar panels, house-battery bank, large water and fuel capacities, tons of spare parts, and an outrageous amount of storage.

Technically refined yet user-friendly, the Leopard 42 features watertight forward collision compartments for enhanced safety, over-sized Yanmar engines with straight shafts for dependable auxiliary power, and a targa arch that provides a solid mounting point for electronics and shade. Systems are designed to be accessible and logical, minimizing time spent troubleshooting and maximizing time aboard.

Under sail the Leopard 42 is noted for its balance of comfortable motion and encouraging performance.
