S/V Surprise — a 2006 Valiant 42 Center Entry located in Porto/Gaia, for sale by broker. Responses to inquiries may come from a broker who is representing the owner as a fiduciary.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
“SURPRISE” IS A BEAUTIFUL BUILT VALIANT 42 which has come on the market for all of the cruisers who realize the GREAT VALUE of a well found, used VALIANT 42 and the economics of the market today!
Over decades of brokering trans-ocean going, bluewater sailboats, we have never seen a boat so completely and thoroughly fit-out, for crossing the oceans of the world. The intent by this owner was a single handed circumnavigation, but partially through this undertaking, his sponsors had to back out because of the current world economy. This has been a stunning loss for this man and his dreams, and he has now decided to put this gorgeous Valiant 42’ on the brokerage market.
He began his adventure on the West Coast, in Bellingham, Washington in February 2025, purchasing “SURPRISE” from her original and only owner. After the purchase, he sailed her to Seattle, where he completed an approximately three-month refit, including about one month on the hard, where “SURPRISE” went through an extensive refit and upgrade.
From Seattle, he sailed through the Panama Canal, and across the Atlantic on this incredible journey. “SURPRISE” is now berthed in Portugal where hopefully we will find a buyer on that side of the Atlantic, but if not, the owner will again cross the Atlantic after hurricane season, where “SURPRISE” will be available for viewing in Florida.
This is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to own a, RARELY FOUND and EXQUISITELY EQUIPPED yacht, for world wide cruising. She is a boat that holds the CLASSIC VALIANT PEDIGREE and equipped with the best there is, to take you safely from anchorage to anchorage in the Caribbean or on your own circumnavigation!!.
“SURPRISE” IS ONE OF THE BEST EQUIPPED, READY TO CRUISE VALIANT 42’s, on the WORLD WIDE MARKET!!!!
“SURPRISE” is a perfect example of a classic Perry offshore design and is one of the rare, and most beautiful Valiant 42’s to come on the market.

This much sought after layout gives you a perfect two-stateroom vessel with a single head and stall shower located aft adjacent to the companionway, a galley to delight any chef, a livable and spacious main saloon, forward facing navigation and an easily accessible dedicated engine room.
“SURPRISE” was designed and built by the best in the sailing world, with the rigors of the ocean foremost in mind, including locking floor boards, Hood stainless steel ports, which are all opening with screens, six Lewmar hatches providing excellent ventilation (and with a fan in each cabin the ventilation is superior), to the light, airy and well ventilated interior with twelve opening ports and six hatches plus two dorades.
Her classic lines incorporate a tumble home stern, bulwarks, opening ports, oversize rod rigging and quality construction. The Valiant 42 is a modern classic. Performance has become synonymous with Valiant and is in no small way, responsible for its success. Sail Magazine selected the Valiant 40 as the “Offshore Cruiser of the Decade.” As a modern classic, “SURPRISE” is a Texas built Valiant 42 with an extensive equipment inventory including all the essential cruising gear and FAR MORE. The hull & topsides are white Awlgrip with an dark blue feature stripe.
She is a modern version of the famous “traditional layout” Valiant 40’ which has taken more sailors on circumnavigations, than any other production yacht. She has everything onboard that you’ve dreamt of, wanted or expected in a world class sailing yacht.
TIME TO QUIT DREAMING…YOU CAN GO SAILING TO ALL THOSE TROPICAL ISLANDS, STARTING TODAY!!! THERE ARE GREAT ADVENTURES AWAITING YOU, onboard YOUR NEW YACHT…. the Valiant 42’ named “SURPRISE”.

At the same time, she is an ideal yacht for a couple seeking a safe, comfortable and capable cruising boat to sail anywhere in the world or to enjoy as a liveaboard.
Her comprehensive major refit was completed in July 2026, with particular attention given to reliability, safety, self-sufficiency and short-handed operation.
Recent upgrades and major service work include new seacocks; new propeller shaft and shaft seal; serviced Max-Prop, new zincs and line cutter; seven coats of Sea Hawk antifouling; new rudder seal and bearing; new transmission; new standing and running rigging; new sails; new walkable solar panels; new wind generator; new dodger and bimini; rebuilt Hydrovane self-steering system; new Spade anchor with 300 ft. of new anchor chain; rebuilt Schaefer headsail furling systems; rebuilt Spectra watermaker; and serviced Edson steering system, among numerous other improvements.

Accommodations & layout
- “SURPRISE” was custom built for two with room for occasional guests, or a family would find her layout a perfect solution for separate stateroom privacy. With over 6’5” of headroom, she is highly customized and styled with the heritage of the finest features found in the most sought after yachting accommodations; bright, well ventilated and finished in the soft, sumptuous ambiance of furniture quality cherry interior.
- Her main feature is the much sought after, V-berth forward and head and double stateroom aft.
- Starting forward, the Queen V-berth stateroom has a extra wide queen sized berth, extremely comfortable guest quarters. The hull sides are finished with Ash battens and there are three roomy storage cabinets with doors on each side.
- LED reading lights are installed along with book shelves port and starboard providing perfect individual space in this large & comfortable forward berth. Two large drawers are under the berth and are lined with aromatic cedar.
- There is a large locker to port with a seat bench and a smaller hanging locker and a bench seat to starboard. The bi-fold Cherry door which separates the V-berth from the main saloon, provides privacy with dressing space in the cabin.
- There is a large Lewmar opening screened hatch overhead which provides superior ventilation, directly over the berth and access to the chain locker is most forward. Two Hood stainless steel ports screened ports add to the light and wonderful air circulation in the Queen V-berth.
- Next aft is the extremely spacious main salon with a traditional centerline drop-leaf table, which folds out to comfortably seat 6. There is a deep storage area on the table top with lift ring and teak cover. The full length L-shaped settee to port, is a perfect sea berth with storage outboard of the settee and large cabinet at the aft end of the settee with double shelves the full length.
- To starboard, is a 5’4” settee berth with cabinetry and shelves outboard and double book shelf with additional storage behind the settee back. A factory installed stainless and marble wood stove is at the forward end of the settee. Water tanks are under the settees and are designed to come right out the companionway if you ever need to replace them, but being high and dry under the settees, that most likely will never be an issue.
- Following the main saloon on the port side, is a classic offshore designed “U” shaped galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside. The galley is one of the most important aspects of a great cruising boat and the Valiant 42 has a galley coveted by all cruisers because it has everything you need including the Valiant pantry! There is a commodious, properly insulated 9 cubic foot reefer/freezer, 3-burner Propane Gimballed stove and oven, double stainless steel sink, more custom cabinetry, generous counter space, hot & cold pressure water, manual salt water pump, slide out trash bin, spice rack and ample storage in drawers, below sink cabinetry and in counter top lockers. To port is the most unique pantry on any sailing vessel of this size. There are 4 extremely deep, slide out shelves with locks with storage cabinet over and locking louvered door for ventilation.
- There is an opening port and overhead hatch with screens in the galley for optimum ventilation. This award winning galley layout is well known in the cruising community and the galley on “SURPRISE” is the social center while preparing gourmet meals, even underway.
- Opposite the galley and to starboard is a large, proper forward facing “navigators station” and “ships command center”, with tremendous room for the exceptional compliment of electronic navigation and communication equipment and chart book storage, in addition to the well laid out electrical panel. The desk lid opens for flat chart and cruising chart books, there is a drawer at centerline with LARGE storage cabinet under. Storage is also found under the nav seat and outboard under the electrical panels. There is a screened opening port for light and ventilation. Alpenglow lights, some with both day and red night vision lights with low amperage halogen bulb lights are found at the nav station and throughout the boats interior.
- Immediately aft of the galley and just to port of the main center entry companionway, there is a double berth with two drawers, hanging locker & dressing seat with storage under and is a comfortable cabin for two plus a perfect sea berth for the off watch crew, as they can be comfortably sleeping just 3’ from the cockpit, if they are needed quickly.
- Outboard the owners can stow important items including the ditch bag and cockpit cushions. When we have guests, this cabin becomes a nice double berth with privacy as it has a door and a folding panel, that when open, provides light and air, and when closed up, provides complete privacy. There are two screened opening ports and an overhead hatch for wonderful light and air ventilation.
- Directly to starboard of the centerline companionway, is the offshore designed head, handy to the cockpit, with a Masterflush forward facing toilet. The head is located starboard adjacent to the companionway and is the ideal design in a offshore passageway. The stall shower makes a perfect wet locker on a passage with a hanging locker outboard of the shower. Large counter space with oval stainless sink with a great deal of storage under and in the Cherry cabinets’ outboard. The head bi-fold privacy door works well and there is a clothes hamper. There are lockers behind the shower seat, a teak grate underfoot and an opening screened port for ventilation. The separate shower area is curtained and separate from the rest of the head.
- Shelves with locker doors align the toilet area side above the counter and S.S. sink has a large storage cabinet under. The engine room has great access from a large door behind the toilet which gives you a large 2nd access to the engine area. There are 2 more opening screened ports in this area, one of which goes to the cockpit area.
- There are Hood stainless steel ports throughout, which are all opening ports and all have screens, six Lewmar hatches providing excellent ventilation (and with a fan in each cabin the ventilation is superior), to the light, airy and well ventilated interior with twelve opening ports and six hatches plus two dorades
